Sight Word Heroes

I created this board a couple of years ago to motivate my students to learn their sight words.  The theme of this board was Sight Word Heroes.

Construction of Heroes

I decided to use my Cricut to cut out a paper doll for each of my students.  For time purposes, I also cut out several different costumes and accessories for the dolls using both, “Everyday Paper Dolls” and “Paper Doll Dress Up” cartridges.  I wanted to make sure that I gave my students the opportunity to create a Super Word Hero that suited them best.  Next, I had the students to select the materials they needed to create their word hero.  After they had their hero created I explained that this doll would be their Sight Word Hero. 

Giving Their Hero a Name

They had to think of a Super Hero Name to give their doll.  Next, I explained that I preferred a name they actually thought of but did allow them the freedom to use an actual super hero name if they preferred. I stated that they needed to give their doll a name based upon the super power they wanted their doll to have.   I was impressed with the thought they put into this.  They thought of names like “Professor X”, “Vanishing Matt” “Indestructible Kaylee” etc. 

Star Tracking

I let my students know that these would be place on the bulletin with a star underneath their hero.  On this star would be their actual name.  The goal of this board would be to see how powerful they could make their hero. Each week that they successfully identified their weekly sight words, they would earn a star sticker.  They would place the star sticker on their name star.  This did seem to be a good motivator for students. 

Reflections

• I would like to note that the weekly sight word list in based on the needs of each individual student.  Words assigned come the  Fry Words list.   Lastly, once they master those words they move onto specific academic vocabulary words.
